Weather Alert: Tropical Storm Ida – U.S. Embassy Havana, Cuba

Location: Havana and western Cuba

Event:  The U.S. National Hurricane Center advises that as of 11:00 a.m. (Havana time) a Hurricane Warning is in effect for the Cuban provinces of Pinar del Rio and Artemisa, and the Isle of Youth.  A Tropical Storm Warning is also in effect for the Cuban provinces of Matanzas, Mayabeque, and Havana.  Life-threatening heavy rains, flash flooding, and mudslides are expected across western Cuba, including the Isle of Youth.  Tropical-storm-force winds may extend outward up to 80 miles (130 km) from the center.

Actions to Take:

  • Monitor current weather, road and water conditions through news sources such as the National Hurricane Center https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/, as well as local news sources.
  • Visit http://www.ready.gov for tips on emergency preparedness.
  •  U.S. citizen residents and visitors are strongly encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Program which enables the Embassy to share both emergency and routine information relevant to Cuba. Enrollment is completed at https://step.state.gov/
