Arrest of a U.S. Citizen

If you or any U.S. citizen is arrested in Cuba, ask the authorities to notify a consular officer at the U.S. Embassy immediately.  The American Citizen Services Unit is not routinely notified of the arrest of dual Cuban-American citizens, so it is particularly important to notify the Embassy in these cases.  Cuban authorities may deny U.S. consular officers access to dual Cuban-American citizens.

As U.S. citizens in Cuba are subject to Cuban laws, the Embassy cannot negotiate or secure a U.S. citizen’s release from jail. However, the American Citizens Services Unit can help protect legitimate interests.  The unit can provide a list of local attorneys, visit U.S. citizens in jail, and contact family members on a U.S. citizen’s behalf.  We can also deliver money, food, and/or personal items sent from family and friends in the United States.
