Secretary Vilsack visits urban market and agricultural cooperative

Havana, November 13, 2015 – This morning, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack visited an urban fruit and vegetable market in Havana, Cuba. There he talked to vendors about the many types of produce that are available to Cubans in urban areas.

Secretary Vilsack then traveled outside the city to meet with members from the Antero Regalado Agricultural Cooperative in Güira de Melena and the Niceto Pérez Livestock Cooperatives in the province of Artemisa. At the cooperatives, he spoke with members about farming and livestock production methods. The Secretary held an open conversation with Cuban farmers to understand how their cooperative memberships work, learn about their irrigation and equipment techniques and challenges, and discuss climate change and other common issues faced by farmers in the United States and Cuba.

This evening, Secretary Vilsack will meet with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez.
